Civil Ceremonies
Civil wedding ceremonies at the Civic Center are performed by the County Clerk’s Office by a Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages. Ceremonies are performed by appointment only.
- Appointments are offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.,11:00 a.m.,1:00 p.m., or 2:00 p.m.
- Ceremonies cost $56.00.
- To make an appointment for a ceremony performed by County Clerk Staff at the Civic Center, please call 415-473-6772 during business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Couples have a choice of getting married in our garden area or in the wedding room in our office. The wedding room can hold 6 persons including the wedding couple and the garden area has a limit of 18 guests. Please note: the appointment is not a venue reservation.
- Cameras are permitted but, for safety reasons, nothing may be thrown in or around the Civic Center areas.
- Couples must be married within 90 days of the issue date of the license.
If you are using a public marriage license, you must bring at least one witness with you to the ceremony. No witnesses are required if you are using a confidential marriage license.
Other Ceremonies
You do not need to make an appointment if you wish to have someone else, besides the County Clerk, officiate your ceremony.
After the public or confidential license is issued, you may have a wedding ceremony anywhere in California, and can be officiated by:
- A priest,
- A rabbi,
- A Minister,
- Or other authorized person of your choice.
Couples must be married within 90 days of the issue date of the license.
The person who performs the ceremony must return the license within 10 days of the ceremony:
- To the Recorder’s Office, Room 232, if public marriage license.
- Or to the County Clerk’s Office, Room 234, if a confidential marriage license.
