Confidential marriage license application

Document last updated on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Summary

Confidential marriage license

A confidential marriage license is not a public record. This means the public cannot view or request a copy of it.

You might choose a confidential license if you:

  • Work in law enforcement;
  • Are in the public eye;
  • Have other privacy concerns.

To get a confidential license, you must swear or affirm that:

  • The information you give is true and correct;
  • You are both unmarried;
  • You live together now;
  • There is no legal reason you cannot marry.

You can have the ceremony anywhere in California.
