Process Server registration

Information about registering as a Process Server.

Appointments are required to register as a process server.  Make an appointment by calling (415) 473-6772 during business hours, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm or you can email us.

Registration Information

Process Servers deliver legal documents to parties that are involved in legal proceedings and are those who make more than ten services of process during one calendar year for specific compensation or in expectation of specific compensation.

 The types of documents California process servers deliver include:

  • summons & complaints;
  • subpoenas;
  • discovery documents;
  • plaintiff’s claim & order (small claims);
  • unlawful detainers;
  • orders to appear;
  • wage attachments;
  • bank levies;
  • landlord/tenant notices and more. 

To register as a process server in Marin County, you must make an appointment and meet the following requirements:

Process Servers must be registered in the County they live in or in which they have their primary place of business.

  • This registration is valid statewide.
  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Applicants must be a resident of the State of California for at least one year prior to filing.
  • No testing or education is required.
  • Applicant is required to post a $2000 bond
    • The bond must have original signatures and original acknowledgement, show the term of the bond is two years.
  • Registrant shall submit a Request for Live Scan form confirming fingerprint submission to the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • An applicant convicted of a felony cannot register to be a process server in California unless a Certificate of Rehabilitation, Expungement or Pardon has been granted.
  • Registration is valid for two years from registration date or until the bond expires.
  • Licensed private investigators are exempt from the registration requirement.
  • Process servers must follow federal and state laws.

To register as a Process Server in Marin County, you must make an appointment and meet the following requirements:

  • Appear in person with a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state identification card, or passport.
  • Complete the Process Server - Individual application
  • Complete a live scan form (download Live Scan form) and complete your live scan in advance of your appointment.
  • Provide two 1 in x 1 in headshot photo for the identification cards.
  • Post a bond for $2000 in favor of County of Marin.

To register as a Process Server in Marin County, you must make an appointment and meet the following requirements:

Process server registration as a corporation/partnership:

  • Corporation/Partnership must be registered in the County where their principal place of business is located, and in which they maintain a branch.
  • Make an appointment by calling 415-473-6772 during business hours, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm or you can email us.
  • Each corporate officer or general partner who will provide service must appear in person with a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state identification card, or passport.
  • Bring completed Process Server - corporation/partnership  application.
  • Complete a live scan for all corporate officers or general partners (download Live Scan form) and complete your live scan in advance of your appointment.
  • Post a bond for $2000 in favor of County of Marin. 

The fee to register as a process server is $117, payable to the Marin County Clerk by:

  • Cash.
  • Check or money order. Phone number must be written on check/money order.
  • Credit or debit cards (a $2.50 convenience fee will be charged for each transaction).

Recording fee

A standard format bond also requires a recording fee of $14.00 for first page. Each additional page requires a recording fee of $ 3.00, payable to the Marin County Recorder by:

  • Cash.
  • Check or money order. Phone number must be written on check/money order.
  • Credit or debit cards (a $2.50 convenience fee will be charged for each transaction).
