Claim Exclusion for Seismic Retrofitting Improvements

You may be eligible for a reassessment exclusion if you make seismic safety improvements or use earthquake hazard mitigation technologies on an existing building.
(See Revenue & Taxation Code Section 74.5.)
- Only the part of your project that includes certified seismic retrofitting is excluded from reassessment.
- This does not include other work like electrical, plumbing, or finishing materials.
Example:
If you spend $100,000 to remodel your property, and $25,000 of that amount is certified as seismic retrofitting, then only the $25,000 is excluded from reassessment.
To qualify, the property owner must:
- File the Claim for Seismic Safety Construction Exclusion from Assessment form
- Include all required supporting documents
- Submit the form within 6 months after the project is finished
