What is a recorded map?

We maintain subdivision maps, parcel maps, and survey maps of Marin County real property, and are able to issue copies.

Common types of recorded maps

Subdivision maps

  • Show land divided into many lots
  • May be referenced in a property’s legal description, within a deed, often with a lot and block number
  • Use "RM" with a Book and Page, or Year and Page, to identify the map, like when requesting copies

Parcel maps

  • Show land divided into a few lots
  • May be referenced in a property’s legal description, within a deed, often with a lot and block number
  • Use "PM" with a Book and Page, or Year and Page, to identify the map, like when requesting copies
  • Note: Recorded Parcel Maps are not the same as an Assessor Parcel Map, or AP Map. AP Maps, are created for assessment purposes only and are available online using a parcel number.

Survey maps

  • Show a survey of one or more parcels of land
  • Not all surveys are recorded
  • Some Assessor Parcel Maps show bold corners around a parcel with a reference number that points to a recorded survey
  • You can also search the Recorder’s Index using the term SURVEY and the owner's last name (for example, SURVEY SMITH)
    • Note: The index will have a reference to a marker page, which includes the Book and Page of the map
    • The marker page does not include an image of the survey map
  • Use "OS" or "RS" with a Book and Page, or Year and Page, to identify the map, like when requesting copies

Other maps

  • "Rancho" maps from the 1800s
  • "Rack and Pull" maps from the 1800s
  • Assessment Diagrams
